Bellarmine Wins NCAA DII National Championship

CONGRATULATIONS KNIGHTS!!!

Bellarmine University defeated BYU-Hawaii 71-68 to win the NCAA Division II national championship. Senior Nick Holmes made 1 of 2 free throws with 2.1 seconds left.

Jeremy Kendle scored 16 points, Justin Benedetti had 15 and Luke Sprague added 10 points and 11 rebounds.

The Knights took the lead for good, 49-48, on Benedetti’s layup with 17:21 left, then built the lead to seven points, 60-53, on Nick Holmes’ layup with 11:14 remaining.

BYU-Hawaii cut the deficit to one point, 66-65, on a a three-pointer by Junior Ale with 2:37 left, but the Knights (33-2) held on thanks to a basket by Chris Dowe with 59 seconds left and free throws from Braydon Hobbs, Kendle and Nick Holmes.

Bellarmine is a Catholic school of about 3,100 students in Louisville, Kentucky, has made 12 appearances in the NCAA tournament, but had never before made it past the regional finals.
